Monday Made It

Hello!

I'm sad today that today marks the start of the last full week off school and that I am back officially next Tuesday...our 6 week break has flown by quicker than ever this year and I'm not sure I am ready to start again quite yet!

It's also the last weekly Monday Made It so I wanted to link up with Tara at 4th Grade Frolics to share a few bits I have been working on this week - thank you Tara for hosting this great linky each week!

My sister asked me to make pinboards for my 2 nieces after seeing some one of her friends had made. I set to work and my first attempt resulted in this one:

I was pretty pleased with it! (The colour is a bit off on the picture here - both side strips were the colour of the one on the left.)

I then tackled the second one. I bought a polka dot jelly roll in brights and decided just to sew the strips together rather than do anything fancier! 

Here's a bit of a photo collage/tutorial on the steps I took to make it! Any questions, just ask!

And the finished product! I was very tempted to keep it myself and may well need to make another with all the leftover material!

We had our annual summer family BBQ today (which turned into an indoor affair as it has rained solidly all day) and I made a cheesecake to take along! Lemon and Line with a Ginger base. Very simple but very yummy!

My final made it was for my classroom. I currently have a pennant banner with numbers 0-50 along the top of one wall in my classroom. I have seen all the great number posters other people have with the visual cues on them though and knew I wanted something like this. However, as I'm in the UK, I needed it with UK coins so decided to make them myself as I couldn't find just what I needed elsewhere.

Perfect for my classroom this year!

Throwback Thursday

I've only joined in with this link up once because I haven't been blogging for that long but as I see so many people are heading back to school right now, I thought I would re-post this Wordless Wednesday post from last month as it seems very relevant! It is all about New Beginnings!

It's been a while since I've linked up with Christina at Sugar and Spice for Wordless Wednesday so I'm excited to join in again this week!

While I haven't even started the holidays yet, I'm still thinking ahead to the new school year and planning what I will do the same and do very differently (must must must keep on top of my marking and tidy desk next year)!

I was looking through some old photos of displays and this one caught my eye:

It's linked to our New Beginnings PSHE unit. The kids write:

 - One actual thing they would take with them from their current school to their dream school on the green leaf

- One tangible 'dream' thing that would be in the school on a red leaf (lots of swimming pools and ipads on these!)

- One intangible thing we would see in their dream school on an orange leaf (kindness, honesty etc.)

- One thing that would not be in their dream school on a brown leaf 

We then take the leaves and add them to the tree to make a great display!

I've been thinking about what my dream classroom will be like in terms of these leaves. 

My question for you is - what would be in your dream school or classroom and what will definitely NOT be there?

Monday Made It!

Another Monday has come along - only one more left!

I'm linking up with Tara for Monday Made It  - I love reading and seeing all the other amazing things teachers have been making either at school or home. Some people are SO creative and clever! You should head on over to Fourth Grade Frolics to read all about them!

This is a quick display I put up not long ago.

The display that was here had become very tatty and I wanted to show off more of the writing my class had been doing and show how much they had grown! I had plans to make sweet keepsakes for each child showing their first piece of writing from the school year and a recent piece but I don't realistically think I will get that done now. Instead I am displaying some examples outside the classroom. I am so proud of how far some of them have come!

We are going to be making some sort of vehicles this week in Design Technology. To prepare us for this I thought we would revise 3D shapes and look at their nets. I printed some off and wanted them to explore and make them to see what shapes they liked best and that would make the best vehicle. This turned out to be more of a lesson in cutting, folding and perseverance that in 3D shapes!

Because they worked so hard on them, I decided to string them up and display so that the hard work and tears were worth it! I also got them to write quick shape riddles to go with them!

If I had planned to do this I would have copied the nets onto brighter coloured paper but I think they still look pretty good!

Five for Friday

Hello!

Friday has finally arrived and I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday!

I am 13 days away from the holidays! 

I loved some of the countdown activities I saw other people doing while reading blogs over the last couple of months (like this balloon pop I saw over at Learnin' Books) and want to do something similar in my class to celebrate the end of year 2 and the approaching summer! 

If you did something like this in your class - what were the activities they enjoyed the most?

My new tables arrived!

I went for beech tops and they brighten up the classroom so much! 

(Even though this is a dingy picture I managed to take!)

I visited another school this week to observe another teacher for some professional development. The school was amazing! The outside space was a dream playground which I could spend hours playing in myself! Unfortunately, when I was shown outside it was playtime so I wasn't able to take any pictures. I did take a quick picture of part of the staffroom though - also amazing! The staffroom in my school is nothing like this - more of a dumping ground for unwanted classroom tables, computers etc. I took the picture so I could show my head teacher and have him transform ours into this relaxing space...

I need to start thinking about updating some displays. I don't think this display justified the wall space it took up this year - any thoughts on what maths facts you think I should have on it? 

(I do have a number display with a hundred square, odd and even, rounding and number sequences on elsewhere in the classroom.)

Meet the teacher!

I'm excited to meet my new class on Monday morning! I've had a handover meeting with their current class teacher and have obviously seen them around school and know a few of the characters already. There are a LOT of very lively boys in the class but I am assured they they are all such keen learners and incredibly bright that I know it will be a great year!

(I'm also so excited there are only 22 children rather than the 29 I have had for most of this year!)
